Understanding the Employee Experience with Cancer

LP-1

Transcarent conducted a first-of-its-kind survey of more than 1,300 employees and caregivers to uncover the real challenges cancer brings to the workplace. The research examines the entire cancer journey— from screening and diagnosis through treatment and survivorship— highlighting gaps in support, access to care, and financial stability.

Key findings reveal major obstacles: nearly half of patients struggled to obtain a clear diagnosis, while most faced delays starting treatment. Both patients and caregivers reported difficulties balancing work responsibilities, emotional health, and financial burdens, with 44% of patients accumulating more than $10,000 in medical debt. Workplace stigma also persists, and many respondents cited the need for better manager training and flexible policies to support employees.

The report identifies five critical themes: early detection support, diagnostic clarity, holistic care, workplace accommodations, and financial assistance. It also outlines actionable opportunities for employers to improve outcomes and reduce costs. Transcarent addresses these challenges through its Cancer Care program and WayFinding™, a personalized navigation solution that guides employees and their families to the right care, benefits, and resources at every step of the cancer journey. Together, these offerings provide comprehensive, compassionate support while helping organizations better manage rising healthcare costs.
